Is your team up to date with forklift training?

In busy warehouse environments training can be the last thing on everyone’s minds. However, it is vital that in a warehouse environment where using forklifts is necessary that forklift training is kept up to date. Here’s why.

There are several reasons why it’s important for forklift operators to have up to date training. Safety first and foremost requires periodic updates, plus forklift operators that are up to date with their training use their equipment effectively, ensuring full productivity and longevity for your forklift.

Forklift training is a basic requirement for those operating a forklift. Allowing workers to operate equipment with no or out of date training is hugely risky, to both your team and the organisation. Each country operates a different licensing or certification system for forklift driving too.

Generally speaking, forklift operators should update their training every 3-5 years – but that is just as a minimum. Equipment and standard practises are updated frequently, so it’s vital that your forklift training is kept up to date. So don’t delay, and book your next forklift training session today!

Tailor your cover letter and CV. It’s time consuming, but making sure you tailor your CV to bring out your skills relevant to the role in question will definitely make your application stand out.

Ask for feedback. If you’re unsure about how you’re doing or if there’s a way you could improve your job search, ask people around you for advice and tips. The issues still facing haulage and logistics in 2022

Last year saw widespread reports of a shortage of HGV drivers alongside a multitude of other challenges facing logistics and haulage. And whilst the government has stepped in and tried to alleviate some of the pressures facing the sector, we’re still facing challenges this year.

The good news is that government intervention has led to a reduction in the driver shortage, with new drivers joining the sector over the last few months. But given an ongoing lack of investment in facilities and conditions, there are concerns that those that have entered the sector afresh may not stay for the long haul. Factors such as high pay and free training will have an impact on whether drivers both continue to join the sector and stay on.

The reports detailing the driving shortage last year highlighted the need for more investment in HGV driver facilities, with the government announcing £50m of funding to improve HGV driver’s parking and rest areas. But how long will it take for the announcement to become a reality for drivers? This could be a crucial development to stopping increased pressures on the sector later on this year.

We’re not out of the woods yet – whilst government intervention is welcome drivers and haulage organisations will be looking for swift changes to make sure the pressures on logistics don’t get worse.

Creating Community in the Warehouse

It’s true, working in a warehouse can be fast paced and highly pressured at times. However, by creating a culture of community in the warehouse, many of these challenges can easily be overcome, leaving the warehouse workforce motivated and feeling supported. So how can you create a community feeling in your warehouse?

It’s all about communication. Good communication is key for any warehouse, and it must be available across all channels, according to the preferences of the workforce. Good communication will make everyone feel well supported and informed, and will encourage friendships and collaborative working.

Share the responsibility. When you feel responsible, you go the extra mile. By encouraging a culture of responsibility and accountability, warehouse workers feel motivated to think beyond their current project. And in a team, people will naturally support one another to take on joint responsibilities.

Champion best practise. When something is done well, it should be promoted and celebrated. By documenting best practise, employees feel empowered in their roles, especially when they are new to the organisation. And with clear best practise, people can easily support one another to be better!

Driving Offences: What you need to know

If you drive for a living, your licence is of utmost importance, and driving offences can complicate matters. Here’s everything you need to know about what to do if you have or acquire a driving offence if you drive for a living.

What driving offence? There are a wide number of driving endorsements a driver can receive at any time, with the most common types of offences including speeding and driving through red lights. Adhere to the law at all times when driving; the best solution is to avoid getting any endorsements in the first place!

Be honest. If you drive for a living, it’s temping to lie about any endorsements – it’s vitally important that you be honest at all times. Lies could lead to insurance policies being invalidated which could have grave consequences. Plus it’s pointless; many companies can run checks on your licence and any endorsements will be revealed.

What does this mean? A driving offence doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t drive for a living any longer. Many organisations will take on drivers with limited or mild offences, depending on the circumstances, so keep applying – and always declare it!

Why do customers get angry?

If you work in customer service or support consumers in your role, it’s likely you’ll have at least heard a story of a “bad customer”. We’ve all from time to time experienced frustrated customers, but usually there are simple reasons why customers lose their cool – and how it can be avoided or resolved. Here’s our top tips.

Don’t take up valuable time! Your customer is busy. If your systems are taking time or are inefficient, it’s understandable for your customer to get rattled. Make your systems efficient and stress free to ensure your customer can get on their merry way!

Your customer isn’t stupid. It’s no wonder customers get angry with being kept on hold for a long time with little explanation or blatant lies – Be honest if you can’t resolve a problem immediately, be patient and try to be as helpful as possible.

Be polite at all times! Customers get frustrated when they are treated badly or rudely. Whilst customer service can be challenging, you must stay professional at all times. No excuses!

Top tips for keeping your forklift in perfect balance

Forklifts are an incredibly important and useful addition to any warehouse – but not properly loaded they can be incredibly dangerous. It’s vital that you avoid forklift overturns at all times – here’s our top tips.

Plan your load. Don’t overload the forklift and make sure you load it with care, spreading the load evenly. Consider the nature of the load as well, whether or not the product you’re carrying is stable – if not, you may need to adjust your driving.

Think about the environment. Check the condition of the surfaces you’ll be driving on before setting off, and note any slopes or changes to the surfaces so you can adjust your driving accordingly.

Keep it smooth. Lower your forks when driving to increase your stability and drive slowly and smoothly – keep a consistent speed and react to turning corners early to avoid any mistakes caused by late reactions.

Be safe. Wear a seatbelt and adhere to all safety measures at all times – if you’re not sure what they are, make sure you do your homework!

Paper in the Warehouse: It’s time for a change!

Whilst the warehousing world has come a long way following technological advances, there’s still a surprising number of warehouses relying on good old-fashioned pen and paper. However, this practise could be costing organisations a lot of money each year…

Although most companies have some sort of computer based warehouse management system in place, often companies aren’t using these systems to their full advantage and are sticking to pen and paper for some of their processes.

The benefits of an all-encompassing warehouse management system are clear. Not only are they cost saving, but they are also proven to hugely improve efficiency in a warehouse. So why aren’t some managers buying?

Given the busy nature of a warehouse, it may be that some managers simply feel they do not have the time to invest in a system that will mean training sometimes hundreds of employees. Initially installation will clearly impact the effectiveness and output of the warehouse.

However, with eCommerce revolutionising the way consumers behave, managers will need to plan to invest and install a system that can ensure their business keeps up with the competition. Pen and soon won’t be enough.

Stand out and step up your job search

There are plenty of ways to search and find a job, but with job searching being a big task, how can jobseekers ensure they go about it the right way? Find out below.

Use job boards in their entirety. Not only can you use the online job boards to search for all jobs available, most offer tailoring solutions to target your search effectively, so you can search for jobs based on salary, location, education level, and more. Plus you can set up daily email alerts, so the job adverts you’re looking for are sent straight to your inbox. Perfect!

What’s the job title? You may be searching for a specific role, but bear in mind that different companies may name a similar or same job role in different ways. Consider this in your search to make sure you don’t miss that perfect opportunity.

What sector? When filling in your profile on a job board site, make sure you don’t limit your preferred sectors, as this could lead to your CV being overlooked when hiring managers or recruiters search for CVs. Keep it broad.

Adjust as necessary. You may find that your searches can lead to irrelevant results, or that a search stops bringing up the type of jobs you’re looking for. Make sure you adjust your searches accordingly so you don’t miss out.
